The Paper Kites are playing at The Opera House on November 26th!
The Australian indie rock band formed back in 2010 and released their second studio album back in August 2015. When I first heard this band, they had a calm, majestic folk feeling to their music but they have really changed their sound for their new album Twelvefour. Their sophomore album has a slow indie rock feel to it, and I am really happy about the change! Although I love indie folk, I think the changed really worked in their favour. They can definitely pull off both genres of music very well! Compare the difference with these two songs, "Bloom", which is from their first album and "Electric Indigo", from their second album. Click on the title of the song to listen and let me know what you think!

Boy & Bear is coming to the Phoenix Concert Theatre on October 14th.
The Australian indie folk band formed back in 2009 and released their third record back in October. I recently saw this band at the Field Trip Music Festival back in June. They were one of my favourite bands i saw that weekend. They put on a great performance and they're certainly not bad to look at. This is my favourite song by them, it’s called “Feeding Line”. Check it out here! If you are free on October 14th, you should totally check them out! ![]() Young the Giant and Ra Ra Riot are playing at the Sound Academy on September 21st! Young the Giant is an indie rock band from California that formed back in 2004. They are releasing their third record on August 12th and have already released a couple of singles. My favourite track off their new album, Home of the Strange, is called “Something to Believe in”. If you haven't heard it yet, take a listen here! Ra Ra Riot is one of my all time favourite bands. My father and I drove all the way to Montreal just to see them because I wasn’t old enough to see them play in Toronto. It was a great little road trip filled with father and daughter bonding time. I also recently saw them when they came to Toronto a couple of months ago. They are a super fun and unique band. They have a violin and a bass player which is very different for an indie rock band. My favourite song off their new album, Need Your Light, is called “Water”, which was a produced with the help of Vampire Weekend’s Rostam. It’s a really cool track and if you haven’t heard it, listen to it here! Kaleo is coming to town on July 31st at the Mod Club! Get your tickets soon!
This Icelantic band combines the best of rock, blues, country and folk into one powerful sound. In the last couple years, they have broken out of their home country into the world to share their wonderful music. This is my favourite song by them, it's called "All the Pretty Girls". Check it out here! I'm a huge fan of theirs, but I won't be able to see them because I'm going to Nova Scotia that week to visit my family. I will definitely catch them next time they come to Toronto. The Elwins are having another free show this summer! They are playing at the Festival of Friends in Hamilton on August 5th. They hit the stage at 8pm Friday night, so don't be late! I know it's a little bit of a road trip but if you like The Elwins as much as I do, it's so worth the drive! ![]() Birds of Bellwoods is another favourite band of mine and they are playing at the same festival on Saturday, August 6th. They are scheduled to play at 1:15 and of course, it's free! Birds of Bellwoods is a folk band from Toronto and they actually went to my high school which is pretty cool. I have seen them play a few times and recently, they have replaced their banjo with an electric guitar. This change has been really disappointing to me because I fell in love with their folk songs, not their indie rock songs. Never the less, all of their songs are catchy and are fun to listen to. If you've never heard their wonderful sound before, check out my favourite song of theirs called "sky". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w59aSsXFxms Toronto Urban Roots Festival has officially announced a Bonus Series! They are releasing tickets tomorrow for additional shows that extend beyond the Fort York Garrison Common. Bands expected to play include: The Sheepdogs, The New Pornographers, and Dwayne Gretzky covering The Tragically Hip's best hits!

The alternative folk band are travelling from the UK to play for us here in the city of Toronto. I have known this band for a while, but only recently grew an appreciation for their music. One of their songs called "Elysium", captures a group of teenagers that lose their best friend Paul Lee due to a shooting at their school, Seattle Pacific University. Their music video follows Paul's group of friends through their struggle of losing a friend and the journey of becoming an adult. It's a really emotional video and the Bear's Den song captures the story perfectly. If you have not seen it or want to watch it again, here's a link to the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BH-wP2TDUBQ Here is also an interview with the director of this music video: http://www.people.com/article/bears-den-video-elysium-tribute-seattle-pacific-shooting-paul-lee-james-marcus-haney I will definitely be buying my tickets to go see Bear's Den. I hope to see you all there! ![]() My favourite band of all times, Born Ruffians, is having a concert on October 20th at The Danforth Music Hall! The tickets come out on Friday! I am lucky enough to have a mother who wins me tickets on the radio all the time and has already won me tickets from Indie88 for this show. Thank you mom, you're the best! I have a little obsession with this band...I have seen them 13 times already so this will be my 14th time and I cant wait! I saw them a couple weekends ago at NXNE. Born Ruffians killed it, as always! They played a lot of their old stuff from their first album, Red, Yellow, and Blue and also played few songs from their new album RUFF. They played a couple of their new songs off extra RUFF which was a separate EP from the new album. These guys know how to put on a great show and get the audience pumped! They are going on tour with Tokyo Police Club and The Elwins, two of my other favourite bands, in September. The folks on the West coast are sure lucky to have these three wonderful bands playing together! I'm super excited to see Born Ruffians, again. I hope to see you there too! Benjamin Francis Leftwich is coming to the Drake hotel his Satuday, July 16th! Tickets are still available if you're interested, just click the link below.
https://guestlistapp.com/events/409980 I use to listen to Mr. Leftwich back when I was in high school and was always a fan of his singer-songwriter-writer/folk sound. Most his music is slow and calm, which is great music for reading outside on summer nights. If you've never heard him before, this is my favourite song by him, it's called Atlas Hands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pyue2N1XZ0M&index=1&list=PLg7kbDfBiex7b6NP9CmFdQJhOuVUJU8_M Unfotunately, I will not be able to attend his show but I'm sure he will be great live! Definitely check him out if you are free this Saturday night! HONNE is having a concert on August 10th at the Mod Club! There are tickets still available and they're only $18.50!
The British-duo formed in 2014 while they were in university and came up with the name HONNE after a Japanese word meaning "real intention". They make electronic-soul music that they produce, write and record themselves. If you haven't heard their wonderful music, take a listen! This is my favourite song by them, it's called Woman. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnaUgSQh0BU These talented guys are on my list of concerts that I am seeing this summer! Im' very excited to see them and hope to see you there too! |
